Our Editor Review for the New Bitdefender Total Security 2022

Another year, another big update for Bitdefender’s security software suite, and this time we’re looking at new version of Bitdefender Total Security (Bitdefender Total Security 2022).

The interface stays mostly the same, keeping the high visibility and functionality of previous year’s versions, but changing the color palette a bit to stay fresh. In other words, I’d say this is more of a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach.

The top of the dashboard screen gives out personalized tips, like in our example we can see a pop-up advising us to enable ransomware remediation, a feature that will enable extra protection against ransomware encrypting your files. This feature is quite topical if we look at the last 3-4 years of ransomware history, so it’s a pretty valuable part of the package.

Lower we can see the default setup of cards, quick scan, VPN, licensing info – remember that most of this is customizable, so, for example, we can replace this feature here with something more suitable to us.

The cards themselves are fully functional, of course, so “Quick Scan” does exactly what you expect: scans your computer’s most system folders, and neutralizes all potential issues.

Bitdefender’s prefers to give users the option to either go with the default settings in their security software, or to let the user control every aspect of their product, and for the second type of people we have tabs other than dashboard, like the “Protection” tab, for example.

The classic quick scan and system scan are here, but advanced users can also check out the quarantine, to see which files the antivirus deemed unsafe – since that can help fine tune the software’s analysis tools.

The vulnerability scan’s functionality is important for finding out potential exploit points either on your computer or your home network. This can be as innocuous as a missing windows security password, or something a lot more sinister, like a smart lightbulb that’s known to be exploitable for hacker use.

The firewall can allow or restrict internet access for specific applications, as well as create more complex and detailed profiles and settings for your protection. 

Antispam, when given control over your email account, will control white and blacklists of received mail, using a complex analytics for sorting junk mail.

Another tab mostly intended for more advanced users is the Privacy tab. Here we can see the Wallet, which was previously named Password manager. The wallet which keeps your passwords and other sensitive data safe, and fills it in for you when you log in, so you don’t have to remember them.

The File Shredder feature goes over the deleted data on your HDD and overwrites it with blank data, or zeroes. This procedure makes it almost impossible to recover the files afterwards, even with advanced means.

We can see the same VPN feature we saw in the dashboard, once again, it’s great that BitDefender offers it’s own VPN feature, since it’s so handy for getting around georestrictions on content online.

Safepay is still here from last year, a very powerful feature that is essentially a separate browser window with extra protection, that’s meant for making secure online transactions.

Bitdefender Anti-Tracker turns off advertising data collection, protecting you against targeted ads. Keep in mind that this feature requires you to install a plugin in your browser.

The utilities section has been kept mostly the same. It still offers you features for optimizing your boot time, cleaning your storage drives from unnecessary files, and protecting your data in case your computer gets stolen. Great features all around.

Overall, Bitdefender Total Security 2022 looks like more of a maintenance update, which is not a bad thing. The last year’s version was a big jump in feature set and design, so it’s okay that the team is mostly using this years version to iron out the bugs and make the best possible version of their Bitdefender software. One of the biggest features of this year’s release of Bitdefender, is the updated interface: the Autopilot, mode designed to protect your PC while also not bothering you with pop-ups, has been updated to inform users about new features; and the Dashboard is now customizable! In other words, you can now change these blocks to your liking: don’t have any use for safepay? Change it to someone else! It’s a small feature, but a huge boost to the software’s usability.

The antivirus features in Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2019 have been updated as well, especially Bitdefender’s Advanced Threat Defense – a heuristic method of detecting malware in real time that can spot malicious behavior even when put against the newest forms of malware. The best thing about Advanced Threat Defense, is that it gets better with every attack, since it dynamically learns new malicious behaviors, it really is a gift that keeps on giving.

The “Quick Scan” feature does just that, a quick scan of your computer’s most important folders, while the “System Scan” will take a closer look at your PC, checking the rest of your data. Clicking on “manage scans”, you can control scans that are already in progress, as well as create a custom scan. The file shredder is a great tool if you want to remove a file from your system permanently. The problem with computer storage, is that with most types of hardware, there’s some residue left after the file is deleted. Bitdefender’s File shredder will overwrite the deleted data to make sure that no one will be able to access it afterwards.

The Password Manager, or the so called Wallet, stores your passwords, credit card information and other sensitive data in an encrypted vault, keeping it safe from malicious software, and keeping your web browsing experience easy, since the browser extensions will offer you automatic password entry for your convenience.

VPN, or a Virtual Private Network establishes a secure connection between your device and a remote server that no one can monitor or access, not even your Internet Service Provider. This greatly boosts your security and privacy. The built in VPN service is limited to 200 megabytes, but Bitdefender Premium VPN doesn’t have a traffic cap and allows you to bypass geographical restrictions on content by tunneling to a server in a different country.

Safepay is a web browser sealed in a virtual sandbox - this allows for much greater security and privacy. It was mainly designed to keep your online banking and e-shopping private, but you're free to use it however you like. It's a valuable feature that a lot of antiviruses miss these days.

In the end, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2019 packs a lot of useful features in a great looking package. Today I’m going to review the new Bitdefender Internet Security 2019.

Bitdefender, winner of multiple PCMag nominations, has finally released the newest edition of Internet Security, so, let’s take a look at the new and updated features, as well as the new interface in Bitdefender Internet Security 2019.

One of Bitdefender’s highlights, the Autopilot, designed to apply optimal security settings without user intervention, has been rethought to also assist and educate users on new features; as well as dynamically choose which relevant functions to show in the dashboard – this way you’ll be able to get more from Bitdefender.

You can also monitor which applications tried to access the Internet and when, allowing you to intelligently control applications you don’t fully trust with your data. One feature I really like is the ability to apply individual limitations to different network connections: for example, if you don’t trust an open Wi-Fi hotspot to transmit sensitive data, but you have full confidence your home connection, you can apply limitations you consider suitable for each connection.

Safepay is a sandboxed browser that’s designed to keep your banking information and other types of online payment secure from rogue software. While you’re safely managing your financial affairs, Safepay:

• Blocks remote access to your desktop
• Offers a virtual keyboard that’s impossible to hijack using keylogging software 
• Wi-Fi hotspot protection techniques to make sure your transactions are protected from all fronts. 

The web filtering technology, Web Attack Prevention, has also been improved this year, this feature makes sure that users never land on a harmful website by checking addresses you visit against a massive database of malicious domains. This feature will protect you against most browser-related attacks.

Webcam protection is another feature offered in Internet Security. This security module monitors when applications try to get access to your webcam, and notifies you every time it happens. You can also permanently block access to the webcam to some applications. Alternatively, if you have no use for the webcam at all, and wish to disable it completely on a device that has it built in, like a laptop, you can do so!

One exciting new feature is called “Online Threat Prevention”, it

• Monitors your system for possible vulnerable entry points 
• Detects and blocks brute-force attempts 
• Prevents botnet attacks and keeps sensitive information away from unencrypted data forms. 

The antispam block, accessible in Bitdefender Internet security, works with local email clients like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird. It offers protection from frequent attack avenues like spam and phishing. By using a various intelligent filters, it determines which messages are spam, and which are not; but it also allows you to apply your own filters, for example, you can block messages containing specific character sets, like Asian characters and Cyrillic alphabets, and you can also create a list of trusted domains and addresses, to prevent false flagging.

The File Encryption module allows you to create encrypted, password-protected file vaults, where you can safely store your sensitive information. Keep in mind though, that decrypting filevaults will take time, so the bigger it is, the more resource intensive it’ll be to access those files.

Overall, Bitdefender Internet Security 2019 offers a great tool-set focused on Web and virus protection. The interface is easy to understand and straight to the point, and the performance hit is minimal.

Today I’m going to review the new version of Bitdefender security

After a year of working behind the scenes, Bitdefender is finally ready to show glimpses of their updated Total Security suite to the members of the closed beta test.

The very first thing you notice is the updated interface. It seems the saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies to this version of Bitdefender; since most of the changes made to the interface are aesthetic in nature. One new feature I really appreciate though, is the customizable Dashboard: the dashboard in Bitdefender 2018 was useful enough, but being able to add your own quick actions and status screens is incredibly valuable.

Other than that, the dashboard is mostly the same: the Autopilot, rightfully taking first place in the dashboard, will keep the antivirus from bothering you with pop-ups, while still handling your file and web security. With it turned on, you can be sure to have an optimal and safe experience. While “Quick Scan” does exactly what you expect: scans your computer’s most important folders for active threats and neutralizes them, if needed.

Just as before, if you prefer to have more control over your antivirus functionality, you can visit tabs other than Dashboard, for example, the “Protection” tab. In the antivirus section here, you can see the aforementioned quick scan, and the “System Scan”, which will take a closer look at your PC, checking the rest of your data. Of course, most of the antivirus functionality is customizable, for example, if you trust your local network, you can disable scanning network drives to improve your performance.

We can also see that the Vulnerability block is still present, and allows you to do a scan, which will check your setup for potential malware entry points like uninstalled security updates, or sometimes even a missing admin password. This block also offers you a Wi-Fi Security Advisor, which will check your wi-fi network for potential backdoors.

The “Online Threat Protection” block in Bitdefender Total Security 2019 uses Bitdefender’s cloud system to secure your web browsing experience. Sticking with the customizability feature set, Bitdefender allows you to put trusted websites in the whitelist, or enable and disable different features in the settings. Bitdefender can also scan your traffic for signs of malware, and block websites that masquerade as trustworthy in order to steal your sensitive data.

The Safe Files block is designed to protect you against malware encrypting your data and demanding ransom for your personal files: you can place sensitive data in specified folders which only applications you explicitly trust will be able to access – a really handy feature.

Switching over to the Privacy tab we can see Bitdefender’s password manager, which securely stores your usernames and passwords, and fills the forms automatically when you log in, so you don’t have to remember them.

The File Shredder feature present in this Data Protection section goes over the deleted data on your HDD and overwrites it with blank info, thus making it nearly impossible to recover the deleted files. This feature is irreplaceable for people whose line of work involves working with sensitive data.

Like before, Bitdefender offers their own VPN solution for its users. It’s great for making sure nobody can snoop in on your internet traffic, and for accessing georestricted content. Keep in mind though, that the VPN functionality included with your Bitdefender installation has a daily traffic limit and is meant as a demo.

Safepay is an extremely powerful feature that makes a return in Bitdefender 2019. Safepay is essentially a separate, protected browser window that’s meant for making secure online transactions – really handy.

The Parental Advisor feature set allows you to discreetly supervise your children’s online activities to keep them safe. Among features this block provides is filtering inappropriate content or controlling the amount of time your kids spend online. A timesaver for family households.

The “Utilities” section offers a number of features mostly revolving around your computer’s performance. For example, Startup Optimizer analyzes what application start with your Windows installation and can either disable these completely, or delay them - thus speeding up your startup time.

Overall, Bitdefender 2019 looks like a solid update so far. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but that’s what comes with beta software. Nonetheless, Bitdefender’s focus on easy to grasp interfaces with a lot of customizability under the hood still shines through. We’ll have to see what Bitdefender comes up with over the next month, when the official release is planned; but so far this seems like another great release from the Romanian developer.
