Rise in Global Cybercrime New Reported by McAfee

Rise in Global Cybercrime, Hits $600 Billion Annually, as Reported

The sudden rise in cybercrime has amounted to $600 billion worldwide, as reported by different agencies. This is mainly due to the high-profile techniques used by hackers and multiplication of criminal marketplaces, including cryptocurrency mining malware.

As reported by McAfee, the Center for Strategic and International Studies discovered that approximately one-fourth of the total cost of cybercrime in 2017 was because of the stealing of intellectual property. Furthermore, the cyber attacks by ransomware are increasing at a very fast speed. The financial institutions in Iran, North Korea, and Russia are the main targets of cyber criminals, while China has been reported to the most active in cyber spying.

The criminals accountable for attacks in cyberspace are utilizing advanced technologies, together with artificial intelligence and encryption. At these illegal activities get unnoticed or hidden as these cyber criminals utilize Bitcoins and cryptocurrency mining malware.

The chief technology officer for McAfee, Steve Grobman, while speaking in a news conference in Washington, disclosed that they are seriously observing the hackers taking advantage of the cutting-edge technology, along with innovative techniques. No doubt, these latest technologies can offer great value when utilized rightfully for other purposes, but, the cyber criminals are adopting them for hiding their information and sources of attacks.

Also, as per the McAfee-CSIS report, the cybercrime costs were increasing more from $445 billion, as anticipated in 2014. The CSIS vice president James Lewis hopes that this amount would knock down, but there is nothing insight as per the developments observed. Moreover, the dominance of a whole 'dark web' phenomenon has generated a safe room for criminals to operate. Subsequently, there has been a sudden increase in cyber criminal activities. The dark web marketplaces also allocate criminals and hackers to sell their tools or services which can be utilized for attacks, in addition to the selling of stolen credit card numbers. Another aspect of these illegal criminal activities is that geopolitical risks of cybercrime hold a major role in cyber attacks.

According to Lewis, Russia is the leader in cybercrime, and tantamount to major criminal activities followed by better skills of its hacker community and its non-adherence to western law enforcement. The second country in this vicinity is North Korea. This nation funds its government with the utilization of cryptocurrency theft. On the similar ground, there has been a spurt in cybercrime in Brazil, India and Vietnam.

The study also revealed that both the governments and the cybercrime community often maintain a close relation. For instance, in a huge attack against US-based Yahoo, one of the cybercriminals worked at the command of Russian intelligence services to carry out the malicious activities. Also, the stolen data was utilized for credit card fraud and spam activities.

The main aim of this study was to collect data pertaining to all of the criminal activities by hackers responsible for the loss of confidential business data, online fraud, stolen credit card misuse, cyber insurance, and fraudulent operation toward publicly traded companies. However, the study did not consider evaluating the cost of all malicious activities on the internet.

The above-mentioned global research report was released after the White House stated that the cyber attacks in the United States amounted to costs between $57 billion and $109 billion, and warned of more harm to the broader economy in future.

McAfee Antivirus Plus 2014 Review

Welcome to McAfee Antivirus Plus 2014 Review by Anti-Virus4U.com

A leader in the antivirus niche, McAfee rolled out McAfee Antivirus Plus 2014 in September, sticking to its AM Core scanning engine for static malware detection. Going with the trend, McAfee has also packed its entry-level antivirus with additional features such as an impressive firewall, giving it the look and feel of a fully packed security suite. However, it is not. McAfee Total Protection 2014 plays that role.

The user interface is again simple with four primary tiles, each displaying the status of various components of the antivirus, namely Virus and Spyware Protection, Web and Email protection and McAfee Updates along with one for your subscription information. You can find links to various other features and reports and help resources in the navigation menu on the right hand side.

As with its previous issues, McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2014 is more successful in detecting malwares when installed in a clean system. It in fact fares well as compared to many other antivirus programs in detecting viruses, spyware, malwares, Trojans, spams, malicious links, etc. However, there are some issues when the product is installed on a system that's already infected with malwares. McAfee’s Windows’ based bootable antivirus program, CleanBoot can help you in this regards which, unlike most other bootable antivirus that run in retro text mode, is impressively successful in detecting almost all malwares that are otherwise detected by a full scan by the main McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2014 program. McAfee provides protection on all levels, including the internet where from most malwares emerge. Its ability to detect malicious URLs is quite impressive. In cases where it cannot detect malicious URLs, it does a good job in blocking malwares on downloading from those links.

McAfee’s trademark service, SiteAdvisor, included in the AntiVirus 2014 suite, continues to grow, crawling the web for malicious links and phishing sites. SiteAdvisor is a fairly simple to use feature, that color-codes your websites according to the threat level that they possess, red for dangerous, yellow for potential threats and green for safe. A grey color signifies the site hasn’t been rated yet. Extent of protection against phishing sites is definitely a pro for the McAfee suite.

Pros:

1. Good Malware detection.
2. SiteAdvisor that maintains a database of malicious and phishing site.
3. Powerful firewall.
4. Includes additional features such as remote management, system services tune-up, file Shredder, etc.
5. CleanBoot CD can fix almost all installation issues. Customer Support can take care of the rest.

Cons:

1. Malware detection is only good. It lags behind when compared to other competing antivirus programs.

Summary:

It's not quite a perfect choice. We recommend that you try the trial version before buying. The final decision is in your hands.

What is the Best Antivirus 2014 - Part 1

Have you ever heard these questions? What is the best antivirus? Is your computer really secured?

Most of the time when we come across these sorts of questions, the first thing which comes into our mind is to look for answers online on Google, Yahoo or Bing, which may sometimes have inadequate answers to the above questions.

In order to help our clients to choose the best antivirus software 2014 which offers the most protection, we consider the following steps:

Step 1: Alpha version / testing - This is a simulation testing done by the developers to find out the first failure of an Antivirus, before the launch of its beta version.

Step 2: Beta version / testing - This test comes after alpha (1st Step). It is then released for free to a group of external users for additional testing.

A Beta version generally begins when all the software features are complete and are working properly. It is meant for testing of known Issues and bugs. This is done for the customers to familiarize themselves with it; detects failures and send feedback to the developer, so as to improve on its capabilities, in order to prepare the final version.

NOTE: You shouldn't use the Beta version as your main security protection.

Step 3: Final version - Final version is the definitive end product.

Botnet servers feature the maximum number in USA

McAfee Antivirus agency recently released a fresh statistic which shows that, USA is the country with the highest count of computers used to build botnets, worldwide.

Computers known as botnet servers refer to remote systems, which issue commands to other PCs in the state of compromise by cyber-criminals, as well as receive huge information in return from those compromised computers.

The number of botnet servers estimated mayn't be exact since many-a-time the botnet servers' owners attempt at disguising their location through the utilization of different tactics especially proxies. Nevertheless, according to McAfee's data, the U.S. houses 631 botnet command-and-control servers that's over 250% more than that in Britain. Meanwhile, by occupying the No.2 position among the countries with the maximum botnet servers, Britain is home to 237 such servers. Following this nation-state are Holland (154), Russia (125), Germany (95) and Korea (81). Apparently, in the USA, the servers can be found chiefly in Washington D.C., California and Los Angeles.

Also, considering the list of ten countries with the maximum servers, Canada managed to be the best having merely 38, while more countries managing likewise consist of Switzerland, Australia and China with 77, 63 and 48 servers respectively.

Simultaneously, presuming that McAfee's list isn't wholly exact due to the masking of the C&C servers' locations, still irrespective of the positions they occupy, bot-networks are a highly dangerous security threat online given that they're capable of potentially damaging many million PCs.

Moreover according to McAfee, authorities enforcing legal acts have tried their best to bring an increasing number of botnet creators to justice. During 2012, a particular hacker was arrested and punished for compromising 72,000 PCs and converting them into zombies. Then the notorious Bredolab network-of-bots' builder, during May 2012, was sentenced to 4 years in jail, while during December same year, Facebook assisted FBI in clamping on a gang, which amassed 11m contaminated PCs for a botnet.

However, the cyber-criminals constantly improve upon their attacks via releasing more-and-more malicious programs. In September 2012, McAfee reported that malicious programs increased so fast that was never seen before, during the last 4-yrs.
